Carb Depletion - it's trendy, but why?

One carb, two carb, red carb, blue carb. Wait – that’s the wrong story. Although, I imagine that if Dr. Seuss had written a book about carbs, this would have been a likely title.

Carbs, short for carbohydrates, provide essential nutrients that are vital to producing energy and keeping your body functioning at a high level. Unfortunately, they have become labeled as a necessary evil that can contribute to weight gain, cause illness, and are often blamed for a variety of health ailments.

Talk to anyone who pays particular attention to their diet and you’re sure to find someone who practices or has practiced some form of carb cycling, carb restriction or alternately, high carbohydrate consumption which is often referred to as carb loading. The latest trend on our radar is carb depletion.

In fact, I am currently in a test group for a brand-new program that Beachbody will release later this summer, and carb depletion is the focus of the eating plan.  So, what is carb depletion you ask? Read on for details!

Carb depletion diets fall into the carb restriction category and are intended to encourage weight loss by limiting the intake of carbohydrates. These types of diets promote eating high protein and high-fat foods while reducing the consumption of food sources that are easily turned into glucose, the body’s main source of energy. Once carbohydrates are eliminated, the body cannot rely on glucose, so it turns to fat stores for fuel. Some carb depletion diets encourage removing all carbohydrates while others only certain types.  

During carb cycling / carb depletion, your diet starts with a limited amount of carbohydrates each day and then you slowly remove them until you are completely carb-free for a short time.

Carb depletion can be a very effective way to quickly drop weight and is a common practice for fitness competitors, bodybuilders, and other physique-centric athletes to prepare for shows or competitions. However, it should be done carefully and only after thorough research and planning. It is not intended to be sustained for long periods of time and of course, the best practice is to always speak with your physician before embarking on any new weight-loss program. 

During the Shift Shop, we are cycling through two rounds of carb depletion.  After we finish these two rounds, it will be important for us to return to our regular diets that do include a limited amount of carbohydrates.  As stated earlier, carb depletion diets are only meant to be practiced for a short amount of time.  But they can do a great job of "confusing" your body, thereby busting through a weight-loss plateau!

And for the record, green eggs and ham would make a great low-carb meal choice.

1st healthy meal I did NOT like!?

It finally happened!!! The first clean meal I did not like, but it looks pretty right?! A for effort?? But otherwise, 😬😳😝 there are a fair share of non-healthy things, but for the most part, most restaurants offer these kind of things...not sure what they're even called? Chai pudding? One things for sure... EVERYTHING has coconut in it here. I have such an odd allergy 😰

Matthew got Dutch baby pancakes with the best bacon I have had in 39 yrs!! I may have tried to switch him. You can guess how that went. I mean, "might" have gone 😂😂😂

Australian shabu shabu

This was dinner last night 😂😂 Matthew (or I) have been falling asleep around 5/6 pm every night. I know - party animal🙋🏼🙋🏼🙋🏼 I'll nap today so I can make it through date night (goal is at least 8pm) 👏🏻 

This is called Shabu Shabu (Japanese) and amazingly fun, delicious and kid-friendly (assuming they're awake for it). Matthew cost us $22 and slept the whole time😬🙄 

Sushi bar, tempura bar, salad bar, and soup bar. My portions look huge, but those were all bulky mussels below it, shrimp and calamari.  A I tossed all the rice under my sushi to save space in my tummy 😉 yummmmy!

First date night in Australia!

I could get used to all these dates with this guy!! Sushi lunch yesterday and sushi dinner tonight ❤️❤️ might have hit up a wine and dessert bar afterwards to watch a big rugby match. Truth - I like rugby better than football. It's so much easier to understand and I love how short it is 🙌🏻🤦🏼‍♀️🙋🏼lol. 

Anyone else think Travis is looking like a lean mean fighting machine?!? 😂He lost 15 lbs since I saw him by working out 3 days a week and drinking Shakeology every day. Took him a year to see what I love about it and be that consistent, but now I'm complaining the blender is too loud. First lunch date down under!

First lunch date with hubby since 2016!! I'd say it was long overdue!! LOL. 

I'm in heaven in Australia. There is sushi and chocolatiers every direction I turn. Now just add in wine and I'll move tomorrow. It is fun being a tourist here!! I was so into the food I forgot to snap a pic of us, oops!  

And for once...reasonably priced. Guess I'll have to give up on veggies and just eat sushi. Even the soy sauce is cute!

I love my kids. I do. But I've said the Serenity Prayer no less than 136 times today I'm sure!! They are little 👿👿 right now and I'm convinced they're trying to make me drink by 8am. 😬

1st breakfast in Australia

My family's 1st breakfast down under. Couldn't be more different 😂 usually I make one thing, but they lucked out with mommy. Totally out of it, so doing whatever they asked 🙌🏻

✅ Tyler slept too late to get a choice so I made smiley face of English Muffin & 1/2 banana
✅ Travis and I had Kale, tomato, & cheese scramble.

We made it!

He's always been hot to me. But this picture. This moment. We are all together again for first time in 6 months and it feels so good. Boys went SPRINTING towards him.

Air New Zealand - inflight service

15 hours. We survived leg one. I. Am. Beat. But thank goodness for Sky Couch, unlimited movies and free New Zealand wines. They even do wine tastings on the plane. Sorry Southwest, but I am an Air New Zealand fan. Didn't have to twist my arm for mimosas after a long night. 

Pretty decent kids meal right? I chose Gluten Intolerance thinking it would be healthiest, and then had Matthew's chocolate mousse cake. Hey - you snooze, you lose 😉😂

Paleo Double Chocolate Gooey Cake

For the brownie layer

1 C almond meal
1/2 tsp baking powder
Pinch of sea salt
2 TBSP coconut oil
1 TBSP honey
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 C chocolate chips, melted in microwave
1 TBSP chia seeds

For the cookie dough layer

1 cup almond meal
Pinch sea salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
3 oz plain applesauce
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup coconut sugar (or brown sugar)
